Les,
COTA has been advocating for some time for a more proactive approach by Government departments to address ageism and age discrimination. In particular we have called for the government to fund a project examining government policies and programs through an ‘ageism lens’, and an education and awareness raising program be developed for employees and staff of government departments and programs to assist in understanding the implications of ageism and the implementation of strategies to overcome its perpetuation. We agree that Government departments should be leading by example to address ageist practices, and recruitment, training and retention of older workers would be a good place to start.

Hi Val, Centrelink’s Financial Information Service runs early evening information seminars on topics related to retirement, pensions, etc. The dates and venues can be found on Centrelink’s web site, http://www.centrelink.gov.au in the Financial Information Service section. victorian government departments do not have an age discrimination policy that is relevant, the policy only talks about discriminating against current employees, i think the government therefore is discriminatory, in that the departents do not have a clear and stated policy on recruiting and training older workers.
