COTA hosts Aged Care Royal Commission submission writing information session

Following its successful consumer information event about the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety last month, COTA Victoria is planning a series of free community engagement sessions to support older people, with the next session being ‘How to Write a Submission’.

How to Write a Submission will be a group information session to guide people on how to follow the Royal Commission process if they are considering writing a submission.

When: Thursday, 28 March, 10:00–11:30 am
Where: COTA Victoria, Level 4/533 Little Lonsdale St, Melbourne. (Located near Flagstaff Station)
Registrations are essential, and can be made here.

At the end of this workshop, Human Rights Watch researcher Bethany Brown will also briefly speak about an international research and advocacy project for older people’s rights in aged care facilities. For more information on Bethany’s project, read our Human Rights Researcher seeks older person’s lived experiences article.

The Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety has been receiving submissions and listening to witness testimonies at several public hearings since it started this year. The purpose of the commission is to explore issues about the care provided in residential settings, as well as someone’s home, and to consider young people with disabilities living in residential aged care.

The commission recently releasing its first background paper – Navigating the maze: an overview of Australia’s current aged care system. This paper outlines different aspects of the aged care system, the services currently being delivered in Australia and the areas in need of substantial reform.

It touches on the findings of previous reports, studies and surveys into the sector and addresses a number of issues including:

  • cultural perceptions of ageing and older Australians
  • expectations for care
  • the current modes of care available
  • access
  • funding and accreditation
  • quality monitoring.
