New hotline for COVID-19 information

A new telephone hotline is giving older Australians a one-stop source of information for personal support, questions and up-to-date guidelines related to COVID-19. The COVID-19 hotline (1800 171 866) will help older Australians get the critical information they need to stay healthy and safe during the pandemic.

COTA Australia, National Seniors Australia, Older Persons Advocacy Network and Dementia Australia joined together to create the hotline, with support from the Commonwealth Government. It’s recognition that many older Australians aren’t online and can’t access information through websites and social media.

COTA Chief Executive Ian Yates said many older Australians are concerned and unsure how to minimise their exposure while carrying out all essential activities, but can’t necessarily access information online.

‘The Australian Government has very sensibly advised Australians over 70 to stay at home as much as possible,’ Mr Yates said. ‘This means many people have questions about what they should or shouldn’t do or how they can get access to groceries, health care and other services. This hotline will provide the information they need and allow them to speak to an organisation they can trust about their concerns.’
