Pedestrian Safety Tips

Pedestrian Safety Tips preview image

Being visible to drivers is a major safety advantage and COTA Victoria suggests wearing bright reflective armbands or wearing hi-vis vests for walking at night that can be picked up by headlights as safety measure for pedestrians.

  1. Wear lightly coloured or reflective clothing at night and brightly coloured clothing during the day.
  2. Stay in well-lit areas to cross the street.
  3. Make eye contact with drivers in stopped vehicles to make sure they see you before you cross in front of them.
  4. Don’t be distracted by smart phones or hand-held devices – stay alert and watch out.
  5. Don’t wear headphones as your ears will tell you what is happening around you.
  6. Know and follow all traffic rules, signs and signals which are designed to keep you safe.
  7. Use intersections with traffic lights or a pedestrian crossing to cross the road where possible.
  8. If these are not available find a well-lit area and wait for a long gap in traffic to cross safely.
  9. Always walk on the footpath, if a footpath is not available, walk in the far side of the road facing traffic to increase your visibility to drivers.
  10. Plan your trips out and if possible, try to arrange vehicle transport at night for safety.

I was disappointed to see that the key message taken up from this release on the local news was about the vulnerable person taking action by wearing flouro vests to be seen by motorists, rather than motorists needing to take more care to be observant and careful. I am a cyclist and an older person and I am increasingly being threatened by motorists who seem not to care about other legitimate vulnerable road users.

Can you please partner with other groups who represent vulnerable road users to increase safety by working to change driver attitude and behaviour. The introduction of a vulnerable road user law that was proposed last year would be an excellent start and then increased driver education and prosecution of those who do not take care, reducing speed limits in town areas, particularly in shopping precincts and parks, could all help.

Suggesting that older people should wear flouro is addressing the problem about face. I cycle with a headlight, 2 tail lights (one of which is a camera) and wear bright coloured clothing to try my best to be seen. If someone is distracted or aggressive, it won’t matter if I was decked out top to toe in flouro.

      Hi Brenda,
Thank you for your comments. You raise some very good points about road safety and the issues around it. COTA Victoria is very concerned about the over-representation of older Victorians in the pedestrian road toll. We want older Victorians to feel confident to go out and about in the community and feel safe when they do so. COTA Victoria partners with many organisations for many different projects including walking health promotion groups.

I can’t believe you guys are taking this line on the pedestrian road toll. You might as well tell old people to never leave their homes because it’s a dangerous world out there.

Why aren’t you out talking about poor drivers, mostly to blame when older people are hit by cars – and what governments can and should be doing to make streets safer for walking? Very strange stance.

      Hi Meryl,

Thank you for your comments. COTA Victoria is very concerned about the over-representation of older Victorians in the pedestrian road toll. We want older Victorians to feel confident to go out and about in the community and feel safe when they do so. We believe that along with leading the way in encouraging the government to make the streets safer and accessible for older Victorians, it is our role to also help build confidence through awareness and taking active steps to ensure their safety in whatever environment they find themselves in and this may include wearing bright and hivis clothing.

      Have a nice day,
